Nelson Tiffany gives the Guilford Historical Society Insight on the Revolutionary War Soldiers of Guilford

Nelson Tiffany's presentation at the Guilford Historical Society's first social on 2/6/99 was very informative as to the history of 75 Revolutionary War veterans who came from Guilford. Over 50 people attended the presentation from town and other areas.

Mr. Tiffany is the author of 4 volumes of books entitled "Revolutionary War Veterans, Chenango County, N.Y." which was published in 1998 by Heritage Books. It gives detailed histories of each veteran. Of the 75 veterans, 34 are buried in the cemeteries of Guilford, and ten in other towns of Chenango Co. Information was taken from D.A.R. files, pension records, cemetery records, family folders, and historians.

Mr. Tiffany elaborated on the following veterans: Stephen Winsor a colonel, Joshua Mersereau and David Richman both majors, Elisha Smith a lieutenant, and Roswell Morgan and Joseph Rhodes both captains. Then, he informed us of the land sales that eventually became Guilford and discussed the role of the Mersereaus' in the war who were some of the first settlers of Guilford in the area which is now the hamlet of East Guilford.
